Bob Pass- Executive Director

Bob PassBob Pass has been a preeminent coach of top ranked juniors in the Mid-Atlantic Section for the past 33 years. In 1999 he was inducted into the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association Hall of Fame.

Bob has been tennis coach and mentor to more than 600 USTA/MAS ranked junior boys and girls, including 45 players ranked #1 and over 200 ranked in the top ten in their age division in the MAS section. His students have wins over Michael Chang, Malavai Washington and Monica Seles in USTA Nationally sanctioned tournaments. Two of his students have won USTA scholarship awards for the Most Improved player in the Nation. Five of his players have achieved top 10 National rankings from the USTA and many more have achieved top 20 rankings.

Bob Pass 4 Star Tennis Academy started with just 12 girls in 1973. Today it is the largest and most successful junior tennis program in the Mid-Atlantic region.

In 1987 the USTA selected Bob as one of an elite group of junior coaches throughout the country to provide input into the new USTA player development program which was implemented by the USTA in 1988.

Bob has served on, and, or chaired the MAS Junior Competition Committee for 12 years, and also served on the USTA Junior Competition and Training Committee for 2 years as well as serving on the Board of the Washington Tennis Foundation for 4 years. Since 2001 Bob has coached the Bullis High School girls tennis team in Potomac Md. Quote: “the most rewarding aspect of my career is the lifelong relationships I have developed with so many of my students”. Currently six members of the 4 Star Tennis Academy staff are his former students which contributes to the family atmosphere of the Academy environment.

Bob is a graduate of Brown University ‘66 and George Washington School of Law, JD ’69.

 Bear Schofield – Director of “Supernational Program”

Bear joined the 4 Star staff in 2000 to help develop top nationally ranked juniors. In 2002 and 2003 he was also the assistant coach of the American University Men’s tennis team. During these 2 years AU reached it’s highest ever ITA ranking at #68 in 2003. Also during those years, the Eagles won two straight Patriot League Championships and subsequently berths in the NCAA Tournament.

A 1998 graduate of the University of Virginia, with a degree in psychology, Bear was the #1 singles player and part of the #1 doubles team on the Cavalier tennis team. He was a two time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection and captained the team in his last two seasons. He also was the recipient of the Dan Lehman Doubles Award in 1996.

In his junior tournament career Bear earned the #1 ranking in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association (MATA) in Boys 18’s and was ranked as high as #25 nationally. He was also part of the #4 ranked team in the country in 1994.

With Steve Miguel, Bear is currently Director of 4 Star Academy’s “Supernational Program”, and it is his goal to continue to develop top ranked players.

 Khamp Bounkong - Instructor

Khamp BuonkongKhamp is a graduate of West Virginia University, where he received his B.S. in Sports Medicine. He played his college tennis W.V.U. and was an Academic All American. Khamp has over 20 years of tennis experience. He was Head Tennis Professional at both Chantilly Country Club and Hidden Creek Country Club. Khamp came to 4 Star Tennis Academy in 1993 and is now the Director of 4 Star’s MATA ranked/ Player Development Program. Khamp has coached numerous Nationally and Sectionally ranked juniors who have gone on to play college tennis. Khamp is a member of both the USPTA and USPTR, he has passed the USTA Sports Science Competency Tests 1 and 2. He served as a member of the USTA/MATA Executive Committee. He was founder and Co-Chairmen of USTA/MATA Junior Team Tennis. He was Co-Chairman of the Play Tennis America program and was one of the coaches for the USTA Player Development Program in 1992-93. Khamp is a member of Prince National Team/Team Elite. He was also a producer/director of a tennis series called “The Tennis Show” that aired on Channel 10. Khamp’s philosophy on tennis is quote: “Take full advantage of the opportunity that you have to be a better player, each time you step onto the court. Don’t ever lose sight of your goals. You need a road map to success, if you don’t have one, I have one for you”.

  Mehdi Garma – Instructor

Mehdi was born in Morocco, where he began playing tennis as a 6 year old. He competed in tournaments both regionally and nationally in his native country. Later, he also competed in tournaments in France, Switzerland and Spain.

Mehdi came to the United States when he was 12 years old. He continued to pursue his tennis career and competed successfully in junior tournaments in the Mid Atlantic section of the USTA.

Mehdi’s teaching career started while he was attending college at George Mason University, where he was a member of the men’s tennis team. During his summer vacations he started teaching at Skyline Sport and Health Club’s junior tennis camp and at Arlington Y’s junior camp he then continued during the school year, teaching on weekends.

Mehdi joined 4 Star Tennis Academy’s staff in the summer of 2005, and has been working with both adults and juniors.

Raul Iriarte – Director of The Young Tournament Players Group

As a junior tennis player growing up in his native Bolivia Raul was the top ranked junior player and junior National Champion. He went on to represent Bolivia in Davis Cup competition and was elected team captain. He then received a full tennis scholarship to Navarro College in Texas.

Raul first joined 4 Star Tennis Academy’s teaching staff in 1979 to help develop junior tennis players from young tournament players to Nationally ranked players. From 1980-84 he was the Tennis Director at Manor Country Club in Rockville Md. And from 1985-2000 he was the Head Tennis Professional and Tennis Director at Woodmont Country Club also in Rockville. In 2001 He rejoined 4 Star Academy’s and is currently the Director of 4 Star’s Young Tournament Players Development Program working with youngsters from 8-12 years of age.

Raul has coached numerous Nationally Ranked Collegiate and Junior tennis players, including his son Andy, who was ranked in the top 3 by the Mid Atlantic Tennis Association (MATA) and in the top 20 Nationally by the USTA. Andy has also competed internationally at ITF (International Tennis Federation) events and is currently attending NC State University on a full tennis scholarship.

Raul’s greatest tennis moment was when Andy received the USTA Sportsmanship Award at the Supernational Clay Court Championships.
Raul is proud to have worked with such tennis legends as Arthur Ashe and Andre Agassi. He also was a training partner for Guillermo Vilas, Johan Kriek, Andres Gomez Harold Solomon Mel Purcell and Bjorn Borg when they competed at Woodmont.

Raul is a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), the United Sates Tennis Association (USTA), and, he is a certified Professional United States Racket Stringer.

 Steve Miguel- Director of “Supernational Program”

A former 4 Star student, Steve graduated from The Ohio State University in 1991. He played in the top 3 positions on the men’s tennis team for all 4 of his years. In 1988, Steve was chosen for the Big Ten All Conference Team, he was also honored as a member of the “All Century Men’s Tennis Team” at The Ohio State University.

Steve is a certified teaching Professional from both the USPTA and USPTR. Over the past 15 years, Steve has worked with many nationally ranked junior and collegiate players. With Bear Schofield, Steve is the Director of 4 Star’s “Supernational Program”.

 Graham Stilwell – Instructor

As an aspiring junior tennis player, growing up in England Graham won tournaments at every age level including the National Championships in both the 18 and under, and 21 and under divisions.

He played on the Pro tour from 1963-1975, and had career singles wins over Rod Laver, Arthur Ashe, Fred Stolle, Ilie Nastase, John Newcombe, Guillermo Vilas, Tom Okker, Manuel Santana and Tony Roche.

He was a doubles finalist in the U.S. National Championships in 1963 and a semi-finalist at Wimbledon in 1966.

Graham played on the British Davis Cup team from 1963-69, compiling a 10-2 singles record. In 1969 they reached the Inter-Zone Finals losing to Romania 3-2, he won both his singles matches defeating Tiriac and Nastase.

Graham has taught tennis for the past 32 years, working with players at all levels from beginners to world ranked players. Quote: “I get enormous satisfaction from being able to pass on to others both the technical aspects of effective stroke production through my on court teaching, and the mental and emotional aspects of competing through performance coaching*”.

Graham is a member of the USPTA (level 1) and an alumni member of the ATP. He is a member of the Prince National Team/Team Elite. He also is the creator of and Director of 4 Star’s “Mental Training” Program.

A native of Springfield, Virginia, David Kwon has established himself as a successful player with accomplishments such as winning three national tities, getting as high as 4 in the nation, and playing number one singles and doubles at the University of Maryland.  Along with his playing credentials, David has coached a national champion and is currently working with national and sectional tournament players.
